A STEAMER FOUNDERS.
The steamer Oakland foundered off Long Island on Wednesday night., and eleven of herciew were drowned. The vessel left Newcastle on Tuesday for Richmond River with a cargo of coal. A boat win; picked up !>y the steamer Ballinger,, containing the second mate and five seamen and passengers. Long Island is shown on the chart as Broughton Island. The survivors from the Oakland, wrecked off Port Stephen had a terrible six hours in a boat before being rescued by a steamer. Four times the boat, capsized, and an icy wind made the lot of the men who were gradually diminishing in number, one of much suffering. For ei«»ht hours the boat was tossed about, the men having neither food nor water. Steele, the second engineer, jumped overboard, bidding good byo to those left. The cabin bov also lost his reason.
