BE SWEET TOOTHED AND CROW TALL.
English girls just reaching womanhood, and the next generation in its early teens, are usually tall, standing a head or more above their mothers. Although this has been remarked on over and over again, and been made the subject of learned disquisitions, yet no generally accepted cause has been found for the fact up to this time. Now a physician of note says that it is simply a case of lengthened sweetness. By " sweetness " in this particular case the nature of the young ladies is not referred to, but their diet. In fact, statistics of recent years show that Britons of both sexes are increasing in height and weight. Why ? This physician replies—Sugar ! Great Britain has quadrupled its saccharine consumption in the last score of years. This is now the latest explanation of an accepted fact, and it will have to stand until the next one comes along.
