HOUSEHOLDERS' MEETINGS.

LOWER SHOTOVER. The annual meeting of the house-, holders of the Lower Shotover school district was held on Monday night, 27th ult. Despite the intense darkness of the night, nine or ten gentlemen were present. Mr R. M'Bowell presided, and after the reading and confirmation of the minates of the last two annual meetings, the report and balance-sheet were read and adopted. The report is as follows :—" The commissioners have to report that the financial position of the school is satis-, factory, the credit balance on the 31st March last (the end of the financial year) being.£2l lis 4d. In addition to that is the quarterly allowance of £3 3s 3d, so that the actual amount to be handed over to the incoming committee is £24 14s 7d. They have also to report that during the year a well has been sunk within the school-, grounds, and a pump erected over it, so that there is now a permanent and plentiful supply of good water both for. the school and for the master's residence. Some repairs have also been done to the school gates and a flagstaff erected. The commissioners are much indebted to the ladies and gentlemen who formed the committee in connection vith the social, for the handsome donation to the school funds of £l2 15s, and those ladies and gentle-, men have been thanked accordingly through their chairman, Mr W. Butler. The average attendance of pupils for the year is 40. While speaking ef this matter, the commissioners wish to mention that the attendance for the last nine months has increased, and if it continues ab its present number for another two months, the school will be entitled to an assistant teacher ; therefore the parents are asked to assist iu maintaining this average by sending their children as regularly as possible, otherwise the teaching will not be so e.fft clivo, as it is almost impossible for one teacher to do justice to nearly 50 pupils. Our thanks are due to Mr Evison for his untiring interest in fechool matters, and to Mr 3 Evison for her increasing caro of the pupils g. We are pleased to inform you that an efficient sewing teacher, in the parson of Miss A-llen, has been appointed by the Board" Before the election of the new committee took place, the Chairman, Mr R. M'Dowell, referred in eulogi tic terras to the very able and enthusiastic manner in which the retiring commissioners, Messrs J. Allan and J. Turner, had perfoimed their arduous duties during the year now closing. Those two gentlemen, at great venience to themselves, had, throughout their term of office, devoted much time aud labor to the interests of the school, for which they deserve the heartiest thanks of the community. It is a great pity, seeing what valuable work they did, that they could not act as commissioner* for another term. He proposed a hearty vote of thanks to them, which was heartily and unanimously carried. The following gentlemen were nominated to act as the new committee, and being the only ones nominated, were duly elected :—Messrs John Allan, William Butler, George Gray, Alexander M'Millan, George Melvin, William Shaw and John Turner. A hearty vote of thanks to the. chairman closed the meeting. At thß first meeting of the ner com-, mittee, held immediately after the annual meeting, Mr George Melvin, was fleeted chairman and treasurer, and Mr John Allen secretary for the ensuing twelve months.
