The Federal House of Representatives and tha Senate having botli passed the clauses in the Postal Bill enabling thy Postmaster-General to stop the transmission of money fur Tattersall's sweeps through the post, much interest is felt by the public in the question whether the power to stop letters will be enforced in regard to the sweep on the approaching Oaulfi Id and Melbourne Cups. The Bili, when it becomes an Act, is to come into operation on Ist October next—practically in five weeks' time—but the clause in question, beinsj administrative and permissive only, will require to be aided by propeily approved regulations before they have practical effect. MiDrake, Postmaster-General, was asked ■what were the intentions of the Government in the matter. '* The Cabinet," he said, "has not yet airived at a decision, and I certainly am not going to give Tattersall a warning as to the moment 1 shall be prepared to give effect to the clauses."
