RAILWAY CROSSING FATALITY.

Major Brown, aged 81, had been buying fish near the railway crossing in New Pl}mouth, and as a train approached he stepped across the line and was caught by the engine and killed. The deceased arrived there in 1841 ; was the first Superintendsnt of the Pnnince; took a prominent part in the Maori war and was a representative sveral times in the House. Latterly he was a J.P. and also an interpreter. He leaves a widow and several cl ildren, one son being in South Africa. The greatest sorrow is bting evinced for his death, and much outcry at the danger of the crossing.
