but were disappointed. In the first half four tries were Bco.el by N.Z and a g >il was kicked from one. making 14 to 0. Duncan charged tlie lull luck almost at the kick oft"and the bill rebounded over the line, affordim/.the skipper an easy try. Some of the Sydney men thought Duncan knocked it on, and there was a certain amount of doubt <>n the point. Next Smith kicked the ball hard over the line and, following up with a lightning run. got there before it crossed the dead line. The third try was a remarkable effort by Duncan, who secure.! the ball some distance out and fairly beat the whole of the men opposite, who thought each instant he intended to pass, and lee him run in. Vociferous cheers <md shouts of '• Gold old Jimmy " greeted the veteran's skill. From this Wood kicked a goal. To Jacobs fell the next score, and at the same time Costello got a bump on the head, which brought on slight concussion, and the N.S.W. captain had to be taken away on a stretcher. Avern replaced him. In the second section, having the wind, the Sydney backs went in for high kicking and flung the ball about freely. To oppose these tactics the New Zealand forwards ooened out and kept the ball at the toe. From one of their rushes Drake and Purdue got a try between them, and liter Jacobs, by a tremenduous dash, got across again. Just before time was called Shortland and Lindsay, who, in concert, had done some very good work, beat the New Zealand full back and got a well deserved try. New Zealand should have added to the score, as Wood and Smith ran up to the line and the easiest of tries was lost by throwing forward. The game thus <mded —New Zealand, 20 ; New South Wales, 3. The weather was beautiful, and there must been nearly 8000 people present, who were delighted with the play. The Governor was on the ground. The match N.S. Wales against Wanganui, played on Tuesday .afternoon in splendid weather and in presence of a large number of people, resulted in a win for the visitors by 9 to B—all made in the first spell. The play throughout was fust and interesting.
