The Bellevue Hospital, New York, used nine tons of ice in one day in treating cases during the recent heat wave. Trains and excursion steamers carried enormous crowds to the seaside resorts, over 100,000 people visiting Coney Island alone. Large numbers camped on the beach all night, and the seats of Central Park and the public square were packed with men, women, and children driven from their sweltering tenements. Hundreds slept under piers and on the roofs of houses. The crops in many parts of the country were rained, and business seriously injured, by the awful heat, farmers in some place* harvesting by moonlight, Report* from Washington, Philadelphia, Pittsburg, and other cities tell of deaths, suicide*, and insanity caused by the terrific heat. The hot weather is causing some curious innovations. The judges in several instances recently requested counsels and jurymen to remove their coats. The Rev. R. Crutcher, pastor of a fashionable church at St. Louis, preached to a coatless congre< T ation. He especially requested the men to take off their coats and the women their hats. The pastor himself wore a cool white shirt and waistcoat. The church was equipped with electric fans, and iced water was served to the congregation.
