SYDNEY, August 23. About 25,000 claims have been received for old age pensions, and upwards of 14,000 have already been granted. ADELAIDE, August 23. In the Assembly the Treasurer delivered his Budget speech. Ihe revenue for last year was £2,824,000, and the expenditure £2,846,000, leaving a deficit of £16,859. The revenue for the current year was estimated at £2,585,000, including £612,000 to be returned by the Commonwealth, and the expenditure at £2,590,000. He expects the year to end with a surplus of a little over £6,000. The Treasurer considered it safe to look for a seven bushels to the acre harvest. During the last four years there had been a stekdy increase in their producing sources, and but for the war and the Royal visit expenditure they would have had a large suprlus. He expressed the fear that Federation would prove much more expensive than they had anticipated.
