THE COLONY'S FINANCES.
The Ministerial journal, in a semiinspired article, endeavours to reassure the public against current rumours in the lobbies regarding the finances. It declares that the Premier's remarks to the West Coast deputation were exaggerated and caused needless apprehension. Against the surplus of nearly half-a-million at the close of the financial year the only extraordinary expenditure includes £BOOO for the Royal visit and £2«W)00 for the Census and Health Department, mainly Mr Gilruth's expenses. Both the Customs and railway returns are healthy. It is true that a certain financial institution placed some of its money with the Government, but this was in pursuance of authority to borrow for public works. The remarks of the Premier applied only ko this fund, not to the consolidated revenue. Probably the extra calls of the year will diminish the amount for the works fund out of the surplus last year. If Parliament desires to increase the rate of expenditure on trunk railways increased taxation will be necessary.
