It does not in the least matter whether Dumas really wrote “ The Three Musketeers,” or whether it was really the work of Maquet, as was fiercely contended some forty-five years ago ; or whether, again, it was the joint product of all the workers in that extraordinary establishment which was so long the object of Mirecourt’s bitterly clever attacks. Dumas’s name appears on the title-page of something over a thousand works, and the" world gives hip? the credit of their authorship : his peculiar methods are forgotten. One might imagine that, of all his books, the d’Artagnan novels were his favourites, for Dumas himself was a sort of amateur d Artagnan. He was continually trying to forestall his hero, to be the same daring, resourceful, fortunate knight-errant. But in the nineteenth century Ms chances were limited, and his success was only moderate.
