Borough Council.

The adjourned special meeting (re the appointment of a dayman) of above body was held on Tuesday evening last, and was attended by His Worship the Mayor (H. Graham, Esq.), and Crs W. Ruder, J. Reid W.. Selby, L, H. Preston, J. Jenkins, and W. Sommers. Or Preston, in speaking of the duties of a dayman, said that it would be best for the dayman to devote all his time to the Council. Or Butler asked if that meant eight, 10, 12, or how many hours a day. Or Preston, proposed that ike day man water the streets, liaht the lamps, aqd devote the whole of his time to and for the benefit of the Council. Proposed by Or Preston, seconded by Or Summers, and cairied—That the applications be opened. Applications were then read from John Nolan, S. Cooper, G. Ward, M. Tobin, D. Dickinson, and J. Dowdell. The Mayor said that the applications had better be dealt with by ballot. Or Preston showed that they could not deal with the applications that way, and read from the byelaws that the Council must vote by a show of hands. Cr Butler proposed, and Cr Reid seconded—That the applications be dealt with in open Council. Cr Preston proposed that J. Dowdell be appointed. (No seconder). Or Bel by proposed that John Nolan be appointed. Nolan was living near the waterworks, and was very favorably situated in case of accidents.— Seconded by Or Summers. Cr Reid proposed that D. Dickinson be appointed. Cr Butler would second Cr Reid’s motion. Dickinson had been employed by the Council lately, and had given satisfaction. On a show of hands being taken for the amendment, Crs Reid, Butler, and Preston, voted for it. Ora Selby, Summers, and Jenkins voted for the motion. The Mayor then gave his casting vote in favor of Dickinson. It was resolved that the Clerk draft the dayman’s duties, etc., to be in at next ordinary meeting.
