The Hon, J. G. Ward addressed a large audienefc at the Bluff on Tuesday evening. A motion was carried that the meeting thanks Mr Ward for his address, and desires to express their fullest confidence in him as representative of the district, and of the Ministry of which he is a member. Spindrift won the Napier Cup easily, Aio second, and Saracen third. Bloodshot is top weight (9.7) for the great Easter Handicap, and Lady Zetland (9.1) for the great Autumn Handicap. It is reported that Venezuela will pay to Britain a reduced indemnity of £IOOO in satisfaction of an incident which occurred in 1895.
Matters in Armenia are getting worse, and official reports show that 8000 persons weie recently killed rt Orfah and a massa ere of Christians in Albania is feared.
M‘Kinley’s candidature for the United States Presidency is growing in favor. The dervishes lost t0 men in their first attack on theZabdai Defiles near Kuasala, but their loss was heavier in the subsequent attacks. A force of 3000 dervishes now threatens to attack the pass.
It is reported that Medelik will demand from Italy an indemnity of a million sterling for a declaration of peace. The Criminal Court has found Dales, who killed his children, not guilty ot murder, on the ground of insanity.
