Sporting Notes.

[By Peeping 1 Tom-]

It is rumor.red that Strathbaans’ victory dn the R.C. Handicap at Manawatu was a ■severe facer to Dunedin fielders and that something approaching £IOOO found its way North out di the bookies’ pockets. Several local sports who visited the late Dunedin meeting were lucky enough to clear expenses and a trifle over. One and all are loud in their praises of Gipsy Grand. One visitor to the Metropolitan meeting remarked while we were discussing Messrs Stephenson and Hazldtt’a fine colt, “ He can just gallop as fast and as far as they want him.” A meeting ibetween the three crack three-year olds Euppclydon, Fabulist, and Gipsy Grand would be fraught} with unusual interest to the sporting public of all New Zealand. All •fit and well 1 would put my dollars on the son of Gorton and Lady Gertrude. At Tehuna Park, Fantasy opened the eyes of several of our trotting owners, and the came sports assure me that Present Times never went better in his life, yet Mr Mountney’s bid horse could not score at the meeting. Lady Zetland ought to very nearly win the Wanganui Cup again this year, and Liberator must hold a mortgage over the stakes for the first day’s hurdle race, that is if Mr Butler elects to send the old battler north.

Erom Monday’s Daily Times I learn the results of the first day’s racing at the Melbourne Autumn meeting. Some excellent lading was witnessed, and there were two dead heats during the day. Wallace is said to'have lost the St. Ledger through Gough lying too far away in the early part of the race. In any case Cabin Boy must be both -a. game and fast colt to make all the running and last to the end of a St. Ledger journey. JLroha and Sayles ran a dead heat for the .Hopeful Slakes, the first-named winning in the run off. Cabin boy won the 'St. Ledger, Wallace 2nd, Waterfall 3rd. Maluma secured the Newmarket Handicap, ■Courallie 2nd, Pilalus 3rd. Sires Produce Stakes—Coil 1, Facile 2, The Office 3. Essendon Stakes—Quiver 1, Hova 2, Preston 3. Brunswick Stakes—Warpaint and Disfigured dead heat.. Malua had three winners to his credit during the day in Aroha, Maluma, and Disfigured. Mr S. G. Cook’s horses occupied the unenviable position of third on no less than three occasions.
