Local & General.

Probably Our Mr Boyd.— Mr Boyd, manager of the Bank of New Zetland at Greymouth, his resigned his position and accepted an offer from Mr David Ziman to act as his financial adviser.

“Big Divvi !”—Messrs Stephenson and Hazlett drew- £931 as their share of stakes in connection, with the Dunedin Autumn Race Meeting, R. Allan being next with £245.

Messrs O’Meara |and Co. —We draw the attention of the public to a number of very important sales, advertised by this company, in this issue. The sales are principally of sheep, horses, cattle, etc. To the Public. —Mr Sweetlancl, representative tf the D. I. C., opens in Queenstown tomorrow, for a few days only, with choice selection of new season’s goods.

Messrs Mouitzon and Hopkin.— We are informed that, if it is at all possible, Mr Moritzson, of the firm of Moritzson and Hopkin, grain merchants, etc., Dunedin, will visit the barley growers in. this.district in a week or so.

Dentistry. —Mr Yale, Surgeon Dentist, Invercargill, will visit Queenstown on March 19th, and Arrowtown on 26th, remaining for two days only.—Mr Cox, Dentist, Invercargill, will also visit Queenstown on Bth and 9th April.

Good Price. —We were shown a beautiful sample of prime Chevalier malting barley, which has been bought at 3s 3d, delivered in town. The barley is some of the new crop, and is full, plump, and clean—a really choice sample.—Oamaru Mail. Cricket.— Southland somewhat unexpectedly won the cricket match against Otago. Southland were in the minority by 34 in the first innings, but in the second made a better attempt and totalled 134. This left Otago 100 to get, and this they were unable to do, the innings closing for 66, of which Clark made 32. Damages Claimed. —The Clutha Leader learns that Mr G. Aitchcson has served a writ upon the Bruce County Council claiming £2OO damages for loss sustained by floods caused by defection of the lake drainage scheme. Several heavier claims await the result cf this one, which is to come before the Supreme Court at the next civil sittings.

The Small Bird .Nuisance. —From all accounts (says the Southland rimes) the small birds will lessen the yield of oats in Southland to a very large extent. In some cases where they most do congregate, fields of corn, particularly oats, will be scarcely worth reaping, while all through the district the loss of grain will be very considerable. United effort during the winter must be made to jjensure a reduction in the fast iuc-easiug numbers of the birds.. Bad News. —There is in many places in Canterbury actually on the ground fully four bushels of grain, and in addition to that the corn in the ears is in almost all cases badly filled, and will not yield anything like so. much as the quantity of straw would naturally lead one to expect When threshing begins 25 bushels of wheat per acre, even on the good land, will be much nearer the mark than the 40 bushels which were expected only a few weeks ago. Oats have suffered even worse than the wheat.

Accident. —John Boraman (well-known all over Southland by the nickname of “Paddy”), a permanent hand in Messrs Fitzgerald Brothers’ Circus, now in Duucdiu met with a nasty accident on Thursday night. His business was to look after the animals, and while passing through in the evening ho commenced to pit the tigers. One ot them seized him by the right arm and pulled it th:oagh the bars of the cage, indicting severe injuries. Dhekinu Pony Binder.— The Southland Newv says that a veiysiifcessfnl trial of the * Dooming pony binder (for which Messrs Rehl and Gray are agents)- was held on Mr W. Haliiday’s farm at iloslyn Bush on Tuesday last. Tne crop was a very heavy one of oats cut green for chaff, and-the machine, which : was. a Oft cut, opened up. through the heaviest part of thepuldock without a hitch. This is the first machine of the kind in the district, and Mr Hillid.iy, who purchased it, expressed himself highly satisfied with the result, as also did several farmers who were present. FatalFirk at a Ball.—A fire broke out during an artists’ ball at S.uitarem, Portugal and caused a panic, during which many leaped from the windows. Many bnve attempts were made to rescue the people in the burning building, and in several oses the would-be rescuers were overtaken by the flumes, and perished. Forty-three corpses were found in tl e debris when the fire was extinguished. The King of Portugal is visiting the afflicted families. ABSOLUTELY PURE This is the disclosure of rigid scrutiny of analytical chemists and the experience tf those who have taken Wolfe’s Schnapps as a medical agent. Tall Yarn. —The following rather tall yarn is from a Home paper, the Christian World, recently mailed:—“ Some idea of the immense number of rabbits in Australia , may be gathered from the fact that a brdy of them was recently seen four miles wide, and as close as they could run together.”
