Numbers of disappointed seekers for fortune are returning to Melbourne from Western Australia, and judging from a letter received from a prospector at Menzies, the wonder is that so many are able to hang on at all. The writer states that flour is selling at £65 per ton, the small loaf 15d, chaff", 9J the pound weight; mutton 15d per pound; fowls, two guineas per pair; eggs, from 12s to 18s per dozen ; water 8d per gallon ; while board and lodging is from three to four guineas per week. Fever is very prevalent. That the quantity of gold won is small compared with the fuss made about discoveries —walking on pavements of gold, etc., — is evident from the statement of the Premier the other day, viz., that the output of gold for nine years was value for only two and a half millions sterlings.
