Arrow School. —The school was reopened on Monday last under Mr Field (the new head teacher) and Mrs Sutherland. Mr Field comes to the district well recommended. It is to be hoped that parents will do their best to strengthen the teachers’ hands by keeping their children regularly at school—irregular attendance having been a matter of great complaint in the past. The attendance on the opening day was ill, and yesterday tt had increased to 116. Tramway from Lawrence to Roxburgh.— It is proposed to construct a tramway between the places named, presumably for the carriage of passengers, mails, and goods. Public meetings have been held concerning the matter, it being stated that, if Government gave a few blocks of laud, there would not bo much dilHculty in getting the work taken up in Loudon.

Mr Dcn.n’s Lectures. —The Rev. T. W. Dunn’s lectures :u Arrowtown were not largely attended, owing to counterattractions. However, the lecturer showed that he had well studied his subject, and gave a very instructive discourse, which was most attentively listened to. His delineations of character were generally very true. Mr Dunn is continuing to lecture through the goldfields, and we can safely recommend tho people of those places which tie visits to hear him.

Lake County Jockey Club. —-The annual meeting of this Club opened today. The Club are going iu for im provements. They have planted a belt of gums on one side of their reserve, which will, when they grow, afford much-needed shelter. A telegraph board for registering the winners will be used at tl>emeeting, and the Club, while in the mood tor doing tilings properly, have procured a lor, of uumlwied saddle cloths, wrick will bo found to be of great convenient to the public.

Wakatipu s Member. —The Hon. T. Fergus, Defence Minister, accompanied by the local defence officers, fast week visited the various defence works about Dunedin. A visit to the works, at the heads was nude on Thursday, and the flatteries at the Oceau Beach was inspected on Friday. On Monday Mr Fergus inspected the police. He says there is no authority for the statement that it is proposed to retrench in this department. He added that the efficiency of the force would be maintained. Changed Their Minds. —The Orderin Council raising the school age of children and declining to retain children at school after passing the sixth standard has been revoked by the Government.
