Grand Stand Handicap—Lara, 1; Camballo, 2; York,! 3. On the second-day the attendance was small; but the racing was good. A fire broke out in the Octagon oa Monday night. The building was of wood, occupied down-stairs by Mr Millichamp, saw-maker, and up-stairs by Mr Bell. Only the up-stairs was burnt. Insured in the Standard office for £2OO on building. The Dominican Convent Bazaar was opened in the Garrison Hall yesterday by Bishop Moran. £llO was taken during the evening. The Clutha Agricultural Show was held on Tuesday at Balclutha, and was very successful. The City Council have determined to take a plebiscite of the ratepayers to ascertain whether they are favorable to the Mayor being elected by the Councillors in future. The Bermione, 111 days from Home is at the Heads.

PARLIAMENTARY

The Estimates are being passed in Parliament almost without alteration. The Government have it all their own way. An opposition caucus was held on Monday. The result is differently stated in different papers. It is probable, however, that the; Young New Zealand party will vote with Macandrew until the close of the Session. It is not intended to attempt to oust the Government this Session.
