FJ&E AT MR PATERSON# , Hr Wednesday evening last, between thehpurs of 6 or 7 o’Wock, great excitement was created in this town, by its being stated that Mr Paterson’s stable was on fire, and .that gentleman’s woolsbed was in imminent danger of being destroyed. All the available horses were mounted by the townspeople and when-they arrived on the scene they immediately went to work with a 'will. cXhe fire~Waa burning at the upper it ts supposed .the.: |ire originated. Buckets were 1 brought, and a continual stream of water was poured on to keep back the- fiery element. Lupkily the horses (8 in number) and iharness, were got out without any danger. All hope was given up of saving the stable, aad attention was turned to save the woolsbed, and so systematically did everyone wort, that the woolsbed was Itept quite cool. Mr Joseph Anderson, who is in the employ of. Mr Paterson, showed great coolness during the fire. He was instrumental in keeping the fire from the woolsbed,. having - chopped the bieams down, and so cut off all communication,, v To single put any of the gentleman who were there, though is wrong, ns all worked So hard that when the excitement had ceased and there was no sign - of any fife many of them dropped down with fair exhaustion.. . We may however,' mention one fact, the way in which Miss Matilda Paterson acted during the fire. She, calmly stationed herself at the race 'which flows close by, and filled' the buckets as fast a« they could be brought. Such conduct on the part of a yoiin'g lady cannot be too well appreciated^.. ;; g ; An inquest was held on Friday morning, but nothing was pibved as to the origin of the fire, and, the jury returned an open Verdict. ~ . !
