The Select Committee on the Chinese petition met for the first time yesteiday. They agreed to summon Beetham, Cwith papers), Barton, Turton, Alloo, and Quan Hay. In the Council in the evening the Speaker brought under their notice that the probable cost of taking such as step would, at least, be £IOO. After discussion, it was resolved that, in the opinion of this Council, it is undesirable that the witnesses which it is proposed to summon from Queenstown, be summoned. That the Committee be discharged, and the allegation contained in the petition be investigated by the Government during the recess. May 23.
