OBITUARY

Mr Michael Angelo

Mr Michael Angelo, whose death occurred at Queenstown last Friday, was a very old resident of the distiict. Born in Arrow Flat in 1871, the late Mr Angelo, second son of the late Stewart Richard Angelo, and his three brothers took up farming with their father and later moved to 'Frankton, where Mr Angelo assisted his father at the Frankton wharf. He subsequently was taken on the staff of the Lake Wakatipu Steam Shipping Company as a deck hand and continued on Government service. He’ relinquished this work about 16 years ago and lived in retirement to the date of his death. His family consisted of three sons and two daughters and he is survived by his wife, one son, Mr M. Angelo, New Guinea, and two daughters, Mrs D. Wiley, Glenorchy and Mrs T. R. Stroud, Invercargill. The funeral took place on Sunday, the Rev. P. Anderson conducting services at the house and graveside.

The engineer was asked to look into matters affecting footways and other possible amenities for Wanaka. The matter of a fire-fighting unit was deferred in the meantime.

WANAKA WHARVES

On Tuesday, September 10, the council met Captain G. M. Simpson, Superintendent of Marine, Dunedin, and discussed the matter of control and operation of the wharves on Lake Wanaka. Mr J. G. Race, of Osborne Stevens and Stevens, county solicitors, was also present. The Marine Department’s decision was sought on several matters, and Captain Simpson stated that he would report to the Minister who, in turn, would communicate with the council’s solicitors.
