BOROUGH FINANCES.

Sirl do not wish to appear as a stick in the mud, nor do I want to do any pinpricking, but a recent decision of the Queenstown Borough Council has given me much to ponder about. The plea of the Council frequently voiced by both the members and of the town clerk, is that they have no finance. If any suggestion is made to further the progress in the town, such as cleaning the place up, etc., the old cry, “Where is the money coming from?” is the order of the day. All right, let us agree there is no finance. Then can the Council explain where the gift of three months salary to the retiring town clerk is coming from? If a monetary gift is deemed to be most suitable as a gesture of appreciation, then why do the Council not open a subscription list for the ratepayers to give as they think deserving instead of using up the borough finances? Or is the gift to go on the estimates? I agree that some recognition is due to the town clerk, but Jfor the life of me I fail to sec the justification of such recognition as three months’ salary. J.
