FOOTBALL NOTES

By Scrum-half Playing on an extremely hard and tricky ground the Country team was lucky to stave off defeat against Arrowtown in a game which was dead at times but very hard and willing at other periods. The slightly heavier Arrow pack played a solid game and had they shared a little more of the ball with their backs the final score may have been different. In spite of the heavy opposition the Country forwards secured a fair amount of the hall from scrums and lineouts, but the result of the back movements usually broke down through poor handling. N. Thompson played another sound game for Country and R. Brown, at full-back, got his side out of many ■ sticky places. M. Dudley and L. Oakes both stood out in the Arrow backs, the latter scoring a well deserved try. P. Stapp led the Arrowtown pack In determined style and was well supported by J. Scott, J. Dennison and P. Ayson. J. Thompson, J. Reid and R. Hansen worked hard in the Country pack. W. Dagg and C. McLaren, playing for Country, and K. Saunders and Y. Hansen, for Arrow, are young players -who with further games and encouragement will make good useful players. In reply to “Scrum-half’s” Wakatipu team of last issue a Country supporter has submitted' a team which he considers preferable: —Full-back, R. Brown (C); three-quarters —A. McLean (C), R. Anderson (Q), A. Sanders (Q); five-eigths, N. Thompson (C), J. Saunders (C); half-back, J. Spence (C); front-row —J. Scott (A), L. Inder (Q), G. Douglas (C); middle-row —J. Reid (C), F. Rae (Q), J. Dennison (A), S. McLean (C); back row, P. Ayson (A).
