KAIPARA LICENSING COMMITTEE.

HELENSVILLE SOUTH

HOTEL

A special meeting of the above Committee was held at Dargaville last week, Mr. Hunt, S.M., presiding over a full bench. Also present : Messrs V. Trounson. C. N. Hayes, J. A. Me Lean, D. Finlayson and Thos. Bassett.

The chairman said he had considered it advisable to call the committee together to discuss the position of two hotels. With reference to the Helensville South Hotel the owners had previouslysaid to the committee : Don't ask us to rebuild this hotel ; wait till after the election, and then we will rebuild in brick. Now that the poll was over the Licensingparty were of the opinion that continuance was carried by only a narrow majority, and in view of the uncertainty of the trade the the owners of the hotel now made proposals in reference to the Helensville South Hotel that general repairs be proceeded with in lieu ot a new brick erection. Messrs Campbell Ehrenfried, the owners, estimated that it would cost £600 to put the house iv repair, and £400 to refurnish. They did not consider it'fair that £8000 should be spent on a new hotel under the circumstances already referred to.

In reply to Mr. Hayes, the chairman said that Constable Hunt of Helensville was quite satisfied that the proposals now made would be adequate.

Messrs Trounson and Hayes moved that the proposals beagreed to.

In reply to the chairman, Mr. Ryan, foe the owners, said the work would be at once proceded with.

The motion was carried unanimously.

The chairman intimated that the committee would expect something to be done before the annual meeting,—Wairoa Bell.
