THE HELENSVILLE SCHOOL GARDEN FETE.

ALTHOUGH the elements were unpropitious and, in consequence, the Garden Fete was not a garden function, but had to be held in the Star Theatre, its success was far greater than could have been anticipated under such adverse circumstances.

The object of the effort was to provide funds towards the formation of a tennis court for the use oj the children, and after meeting all expenses the fund has benefited to the extent of over £10.

The headmaster and his staff went to an infinite .amount of trouble to make the Fete a success, and are to be con gratulated upon the pleasant and successful outcome of their efforts. In this connection, too, special mention should be made of the Maypole and other dances performed by the children. The precision and grace with which the children performed the dances reflect the highest credit on the unwearied and skilful training of Miss Ganley.

With their usual liberality the parents and ladies of the district did their utmost to help the cause —donating sweets, refreshments, cream, and fancy goods for the stall and Christmas tree. Mr Becroft, the Chairman of the School Committee, gave the use of the Theatre free ; while Mr J. Stewart donated quantities of lovely flowers, and Mr Hunter did all the carting free.

Mrs Hill with a number of other ladies attended to the afternoon tea, and, taken all in all. everyone concerned was highly pleased with the results.
