The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 15, 1882.

The Christchurch mail coach left the Bealey this morning at the usual hour. The inward San Francisco mails for the West Coast being among those transhipped from the Arawata to the Government steamer Stellaat Wellington onSunday last, and landed from the latter vessel at Lyttelton on Monday afternoon, the Kumara portion of the English mail was brought by coach this afternoon, along with the

other mails, arriving at 3.15 p. m., and were at once sorted and delivered.

At the Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before A. 0. Campbell, Esq.', J.P., Sarah Ritchie, an aged woman, for drunkenness, was fined 10s, with the alternative of 48 hours’ imprisoment in Hokitika gaol. The latter coarse resulted;

At the late Central Education Board meeting, when the voting foi : members of the Board was taken, it was found there was no vote from Stafford, and the secretary said he had not received any. But as the Secretary of the Stafford Local Committee says that a letter was sent on the 7th February to the Chairman' of the Westland Education Board, in which he gave, as directed, the name of Mr John M‘Wliirter, as the final choice of the Stafford Committee, it is strange that this vote should have been omitted. The effect would have been that Messrs Grimmond, Guinness, and M‘Whirter would have been 9 each, and a vote would have been taken by the Board as to which two of the throe should have been elected. Now, although there is another vacancy, Mr M'Whirter has not been nominated for it.

Yesterday seems to have been considered by many as the hottest day this season. At Greymouth, the therometer registered 92deg. in the shade.

Too much care cannot be taken during the present hot weather with regard to starting bush fires. In many parts of the town, root and stump-burning may be carried on with a certain amount of safety, Where proper care is exercised ; but a fire which tdok place among the scrub near Third Street to-day, promised at one time ta be rather a serious matter. Some boys are said to, liilve started the blaze.
