Mangapohue Metalling
Ratepayers Approve Proposals Expectations in regard to the poll relating to raising a loan for metalling the Mangapohus road have been realised as indicated by the appended figures. The want of macadamised connection between the railway and Kawhia South has been a burning problem for many years and matters finally developed into the question as to whether the ratepayers ot Kawhia South were prepared to metal a road in another County, the people of which were disinclined to assist. To test the position, and also to comply with the new conditions set out by the Advances Department—that the consent of the ratepayers must precede the applications for loan moneys—a meeting of settlers decided to place the matter to the vote, and on Wednesday last the practically unanimous approval of ratepavers was recorded. The next difficulty will be to raise the money, and failing the loan being available from the State, it is possible that applications will have to bo made to other financial institutions. Although the latter course may involve a higher rate of interest, the importance of establishing permanent and continuous road connection may be deemed adequate compensation. The smaller and subsidiary proposal to metal from Kinohaku towards Waiharakeke, although receiving substantial support, has failed to attract even a bare majority of advocates, and this matter will be abandoned. The fate of this proposal illustrates the mistaken policy of endeavouring to carry a minor loan apart from, instead of a part of a major scheme. Following are the details of the poll MANGAPOHUE LOAN.
