Kawhia Harbour Board

ORDINARY MEETING. All councillors were present as members of the Harbour Board, Mr A. W. Babbage in the chair. Correspondence was dealt with From the captain of the s.s. Rimu complaining that the beacon lights were not burning on two occasions. As Raglan was a tidal port it was necessary to work Kawhia immediately on arrival. —H. T. Draper’s reply was read, reporting that on one occasion he found both lights burning in the afternoon after the steamer’s arrival. In the other istance, an inferior-quality wick caused the leading light to fail. — I It was decided to forward a copy of the report to Capt. Burke. From a number of launch owners asking that willows on the Awaroa river bank be removed. —The chairman supported the application, and he suggested that the Engineer report on the growth with a view of taking action. —Mr Sandilands doubted the advisability of destroying willows altogether on account of preventing future erosion. ENGINEER’S REPORT “Since last meeting the buttershed on the Kawhia wharf has been pulled down and re-erected to double its original size. The cost incurred was £4l Ils 9d. “It was found necessary also to renew the steps at the Kinohaku wharf, the material and labour for this work costing £ll 75.” Special Report A lengthy report was received from MrP. C. Rose regarding the conditions of the Harbour Endowment sections and tenants. Regarding hie statement that certain Harbour Boards had been able to grant tenants a freehold tenure, the chairman moved that the clerk communicate with the Boards mentioned. —Carried. Beacons H. Draper’s tender for lighting beacons was accepted. Oparau Wharf Shed Replying to Mr Sandilands, the Engineer stated that he regarded the Oparau wharf shed as quite safe. Awaroa Shed The chairman moved that Mr Oldbury be appointed caretaker of the Awaroa shed at a salary of £6 per annum. —Carried. Beacon Lights Mr Sandilands referred to the advisability of instituting permanentbeacons. Kawhia was the only port of refuge on the coast, and he thought that the Marine Department might subsidise the Board. He moved that the Minter of Marine be asked to subsidise the cost of instituting permanent lights. The Engineer stated that there was little doubt regarding the efficacy of the “Aga” light—it was simply a matter of expense. No action was taken. Lemon Pt. Wharf In reply to Mr Wright, the Engineer stated that he would take the first opportunity of examining the understructure. He was, however, satisfied that the wharf was perfectly safe. Special Order The Board then constituted itself a special meeting, and passed a resolution authorising the borrowing of a sum of £650 to meet antecedent liabilities.
