0 AUCKLAND MARKETS. Auckland, August 30. The New Zealand Loan & Mee cantile Agency Co., Ltd., report:— At Westfield fat stock market on Wednesday beef was penned in scarcely average numbers, and sold at fully last week’s rates, Best oxen sold at £2 10s tn £2 14s per 1001 b ; others £2 7s to £2 12s per 1001 b ; cow and heifer beef sold at £2 7s to £2 18s ; Steers sold at from £l3 17s 6d to £23 17s 6d. Cows and heifers sold at from £9 to £l7. Some of the averages were:—Seven steers from Mr Jno. Massey, Weeks Island, £2l 5s ; eight steers from Mr M. Harding, Welling ton Park, £l9 3s 9d ; 8 from Mr W. Lawson, £lB 12s 6d; 18 small steers from Mr W. Henry, Taupiti, £l7 2s 3d ; seven small heifers from Mr R. A. Bent, Putaruru, £l3 IBs, Calves were penned in average numbers and sold at late rates. Runners improved in prices, selling at from £6 15s to £9 10s; heavy vealers, £5 15s to £7 ; medium vealers, £4 10s to £5 12s 6d; light vealers, 45s to 87s 63 ; small and fresh dropped, 3s to 435.

Sheep were penned in smaller numbers than usual. Bidding was very spirited, prices advancing considerably in some places 4s to 6s per bead, best wetbers selling at from 47s to 57s ; others 41s 9d to 46s 9d ; best ewes, 38s to 44s 3d ; others 33s 6d to 37e 64 ; hoggets, 82s to 40s ; inferior store hoggets, 16s 9d to 255. Two pens of wethers from Mr W. Harding, Wei lington Park, averaged 48s ; 60 wethers from Lady Hobson, Panmure, 46s 3d ; 69 wethers from Mr A. C. Massey, Mangere, 45s 3d ; 69 wethers from Mr E. G. Ellett, Mangere, 45s 6d ; 50 wethers from Mr W. B. Colbeck, Panmure, 49s 6d.

At Otorohanga on Thursday, 23rd, we had a good entry of all classes of cattle, and there was good enquiry, practically the whole of our yarding changing hands at the following prices :—Choice dairy heifers, £ll 5s to £ll 12s 6d; good dairy cows, £l2 10s to £l3 15s; small and backward heifers, £8 10s to £9 5s ; heavy fat cows, £ll 15s to £l2 10s ; medium quality, £lO 15s to £l} ?s ; Syr steers in forward condition, £l5 10s; 20 months to 2yr steers £lO Ils to £ll 7s ; 28-montbs empty Shorthorn heifers, £7 to £7 14s ; fresh conditioned empty cows, £8 12s to £8 16s ; heavy fat bulls, £l2 10s ; good Shorthorn yearling steers, £7 4s to £7 10s; Shorthorn yearling heifers, £5 10s to £6 5s ; yearling mixed sexes, £4 17s to £6 10s. On the following day nt Waihou we had a smaller entry than usual, yard, ing 166 pigs, 300 fat and store cattle and 106 dairy covys and heifers. There was a good demand for all classes, beef being very firm. MORRINSVILLE SALE The monthly stock sale of the Farmers’ Auctioneering Co. was held on Friday. There was a big yarding of both sheep and cattle, and prices were very high all round, the bidding being very brisk. Prime fat wetbers 43s to 45s ; store wethers, 32s 6d ; good woolly hoggets, 33s 6d to 35s Id; others, 24s 6d to 26s ; about 550 were sold. Porkers brought 29s to 355; baconers 35s to 40) ; weaners, 12s to 18s 64. About 500 cattle were offered practically all bt-ing sold. Fat steers made £l5 10, to £l7 17s 6d ; prime fat cows, £l4 10s to i'l-5 10<; fat heifers £ll Is to £l3 los ; 2 to Byr old steers £l2 15s to £l4 16s; 18 months eteere, £3 I7s tn £9 ; yearling steers £6 12s to £8 5s ; frosh conditioned cows, £9 17s to £lO 15s ; good store cows £8 15 s to £9 10s ; poorer sorts, £7 3s to £8 2s 6d ; steer calves, £6 Is to £7 3s ; heifer calves, 99s to £6 le ; mixed sexes, 82s to £5 19a. About 140 dairy stock was penned. Extra choice dairy cows made £l3 10s to £l5 ss; backward sorts, £9 15s to £ll. A line of Syr old heifers from Mr J. Bell realised £l3 to £l4 5s ; and backward heifers made £6 7s 6d to £9 ss. TAIHAPE STOCK SALE. The usual fortnightly sheep and cattle sale was held at Taihape on Wednesday, the 29th *inst. only small entries coming to band. The attendance of buyers was small. Messrs Dalgety and Co. report as follows: Sheep: Mixed hoggets, 225; small hoggets 16s. Cattle : 18months old steers up to £9 10s; 2Jyr steers £l2 5s to £l2 15s; light fat cows up to £l3 ; dairy cows up to £lO. There was a keen demand for 2| to Syr old steers.

HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT. The High Commissioner’s cable, dated London, September 1, is as follows the quotations, unless otherwise specified, being the average market prices : MEAT. The following maximum wholesale meat prices have been fixed for Sept.— Home killed beef, per lb. 12d ; imported hinds, 12.1-1; fores, 10|d. Home killed mutton and lamb, 13d ; imported ditto, U|d. Home killed pork, 14 Jd; imported ditto, 12|fl. The result is that heavy supplies of home killed mutton and beef at Smithfield market are selling at com paratively low prices, the demand being less than the supply. New Zealand mutton B|d, ewe mutton, B|d. Argentine mutton lOd. Lamb : New Zealand, lOd; Argan, tine mutton lid. Beef : Argentina chilled, hinds, ll|d fores, 9d. It is most probable tha< New Zealand mutton and lamb will be increased in accordance with the wholesalers’ maximum prices quoted above. BUTTER and CHEESE. Quotations are nominal for both butter and cheese, pending orders from the Ministry of Ford. Mean while, as a preliminary to further control, butter importation is prohibited except under license. HEMP. In Manila betnp little business is being done. New Zealand market is affected by uncertainty regarding Government control. It appears pro bable that prices will be established on the ba.-is of Manila and New Zealand high point fair on spot being sold a> auction at £9O per ton. New Zealand common afloat £BB. Wheat : The market is dull on ac count of Government offerings being very small. There is no change in prices.

Oats : The market is steady, and fair business is being done. No 2 white clipped American 59s 6d ; afloat, No 2 Canadian, 64s 6d ; Chillian, 64s for spot.
