BETTY CHASE. When a telegram reached Kawhia on Monday morning that little Betty Chase had succumbed while undergoing an operation in an Auckland private hospital, it is no exaggeration to say that the news came as a peiaonal shock to each individual resident here. Everyone had a feeling of affection for the little girl, whose gentle nature and lovable disj»osition made her a general favourite alike with young and old, who share the grief of the bereaved parents. It will be of some comfort for them to know that their little one, although only nine years old, will be remembered as a generous little girl, who had so early adopted the Golden Rule —to make others happy. When details of the sad occurrence came to band it transpired that she had passed away while under an an<esthetic. the medical evidence at the inquest indicating heart failure, and her remains were laid to rest at the Purewa cemetery on Wednesday morning* A number of wreaths were sent from local institutions and friends, among them being one from the Kawhia school children, the people of I the town, and from the Defence Rifle Club. At the ordinary meeting of the Town Board on Wednesday, a resolution of condolence and sympathy with one of its members was carried and the Board adjourned, while many of the business houses were closed temporarily on that day.|
