TOWN PLANNING

VALUE OF WORK STRESSED. The need for the application of general town-planning principles to county areas was stressed by the Minister of Internal Affairs. Mr. Parry, when opening the biennial conference of the New Zealand Counties' Association in Wellington. With the growth of rapid transport many county areas were, in effect, suburban to the urban areas, said Mr. Parry. That development must and should continue, and with the growth of rapid transport, both by means of the motor-car and electrical traction, the problem would doubtless become more acute. It must be obvious that if residential development was to take place in counties, then counties, as the territorial governing authorities, must have some power to control that development in the interests of the community as a whole. Another important phase of county development was that concerning seaside and other holiday resorts. A large proportion of those holiday resorts were under the jurisdiction of the counties. If these holiday resorts were to be, indeed, recreational areas then the necessity for control to prevent the creation of undesirable conditions was beyond doubt. A number of the counties had already recognised their responsibilities in those directions.
