As the result of the explosion of two bombs at "King's Cross railway station, Dr. Donald Compbell, lecturer at Edinburgh University, who was married early this year, was killed and 16 people were injured. The bombs exploded simultaneously in the left luggage office of the station. Those injured include two women whose clothes were torn off by the blast, and the terrific explosion rocked the neighbourhood.
Mr. J. McDermott, Labour leader, moved in the Eire Seriate that the country is entitled to an explicit statement from the Government as to the justifiability or the expediency of the bombings. Marty people in Britain and Eire believed that the Government secretly sympathised with the outrages. Mr. McDermott withdrew his motion as he was satisfied that Mr. de Valera had indicated the utter futility of the outrages.
Nine States of U.S.A., including New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, with a quarter of the nation's population, and probably the largest proportion of mixed farming areas, are undergoing a heat wave and three" months' drought, exceeding the records for 60 years.
A three-hour plenary session of the conference between British and Japanese representatives dealt with the sub-committee's report on the maintenance of peace and order in Tientsin concession. Consideration of economic questions follow and is regai'ded as the crux of the conference. Mr. Machiro Arita, Japanese Foreign Minister, reported to Cabinet that the conference is proceeding smoothly.
Applications are invited for £16,000,000 of New Zealand conversion stock, 1939-45, at £99, the first payment of £1 15s for which will be made on January 1. Holders of 1940 stock may exchange their holdings, receiving a cash payment of £1 per £IOO. Lists will close on August 5. The "Daily Telegraph" City editor considers that the terms will ensure an J =-itdequate response from investors and financial institutions.
