MANGAPEHI NOTES
WOMEN'S INSTITUTE. The monthly meeting of the Mangapehi Women's Institute was held in the Mangapehi Hall last Wednesday afternoon. There were sixteen members and two visitors present, and after the recitation of the Aspirations, the minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The business of the afternoon consisted mainly of preparations for the celebration of Arbor Day next month, the election of officers for the newly formed Gardening Circle, and the choosing of materials and colours for the Institute Banner. A proposal, which was carried unanimously, was that the Railways Department be approached with regard to the installation of a heater in the waiting room of the Mangapehi station. The roll call—ldeas for Fireside Amusement —was responded to by all present, and many original methods of entertainment brough forward. This months' motto—Don't dodge difficulties; meet .them, greet them, beat them—was supplied by Mrs. Murcott who, with Mrs. Newton, was the recipient of dainty Victorian birthday posies, composed of violets and maidenhair fern. A very interesting demonstration of several ways of making wool rugs was given by Mrs. Faulkner, of Puketutu, who also explained the method used when dying wool with coloured paper instead of the usual dye preparations. Competitions for the premiere flower, best jar of jelly, and best patchwork article, were won by Miss Buck, Mrs. Reinhardt and Mrs. Costello respectively. After afternoon tea had been served by the hostesses, Mesdames Drinkrow, Amundsen and Murcott, the meeting closed with the singing of the New Zealand National Anehem.
