MUNICIPAL BAND

CONTINUED PROGRESS. THE ANNUAL MEETING. NEW OFFICERS ELECTED. There was a full attendance of the Band and only a fair attendance of the general public present at the annual meeting of the Te Kuiti Municipal Band held in the Band Room last evening. The president, Mr. A. Blackman, was in the chair

In presenting his report of the year's work, Mr Blackman said it afforded him the greatest pleasure to find, at the end of the year, that the Band continued to progress. Notwithstanding that the Band had suffered the loss of several young promising players through departure from the town during the year, it had shown a considerable improvement musically. In support of this, one had only to remember the Band's success at the Easter contest, where, although the Band was not placed first in any of the events in which it competed, yet it was successful in carrying off the C grade shield, which was awarded for the most points in music. The Band had continued to play out practically every fortnight, and in this connection it was pleasing to notice from the receipts side of the balance sheet that this part of the Band's activities was appreciated by the business people of the town. The Band played several programmes at the Te Kuiti Hospital which have been especially appreciated, and has also given its services at many public functions, on the last Anzac Day practically the whole day being given up by members of the Band. Appreciated by the Public. When it was remembered that the Band relied wholly for its support on the Te Kuiti Borough Council's subsidy, together with subscriptions received from the businessmen of the town, it would be realised that the Band had nobly done its duty to the public.

During the year the Band held its first annual social evening in the Band Rooijp, and this proved to be an outstanding success, great credit being due to the ladies' committee, under Mrs. R. D. Lee At a later date the Band tendered a complimentary social evening in appreciation of the good work done by the ladies' committee. On behalf of the committee, Mr. Blackman thanked the Borough Council, the businessmen, and all who had contributed to the Band's funds during the year, and in doing so pointed out that in return the Band was now at a playing strength and efficiency for which all concerned might be justly proud. He closed the report with complimenting the Bandmaster, Mr. R. D. Lee, on his work since he had been in charge of the Band. The balance sheet presented by the treasurer, Mr. M. J. Strange, showed the Band to be in a strong position —assets were set down at £633, and there were no liabilities. During the year the revenue had amounted to £l9O, the principal items having been the Borough Council grant of £75, the businessmen's subscriptions amounting to £93, and other donations to £l2. The principal items of expenditure were £92 conductor's honorarium, travelling expenses for, bandsmen £l6, uniforms £lB, and rent and additions to Band Room £24.
