FREE SCHOOL BOOKS
ISSUE BY GOVERNMENT. ■ mmmmmmm WORK IN PREPARATION. In 1941 free school books will be issued to all primary school children by the State, according to Mr. A. K. Robertshaw, president of the North Taranaki branch of the Educational Institute and headmaster of the Fitzroy Primary School, who told the annual meeting of the North Taranaki Primary School Committees' Association at New Plymouth last night that work was now in progress on the preparation of the books. To prevent the cost of education becoming burdensome the Education Department should be urged to standardise primary school books, said Mr. A. L. Kitchingman, Central School.
The same hardship did not exist today as a few years ago, when every education board had a different list of standard books, said Mr. S. G. Smith, a member of the Taranaki Education Board. Now the list prepared by the Department was revised every five years and large contracts were let so that the cost could be kept down.
A committee was now drafting and re-writing school books for the Government, said Mr. Robertshaw. .It was originally hoped to have the books ready by 1940, but they would now be ready by 1941.
