NEWS AND NOTES
o The well-known economist, Sir George Paish, in a speech in Manchester, said that after several months' residence in Japan he was convinced Japan was acting in Tientsin, almost entirely under the direction of Germany, the incident reflecting Germany's world-wide campaign against Britain in order to confront her with the greatest possible difficulties. Captain L. E. Hawkins, master of the small American oil tanker Associates, has sent a message to his owners at San Francisco stating that he rescued 209 of the passengers and crew, totalling 214, of the Japanese freighter Bokuyo Maru, after a fire and explosion 3750 miles east of San Francisco. Senator Vandenberg has offered a resolution to the Senate requiring the United States to renounce the 1911 treaty of -amity and commerce with Japan, and reconvening the Brussels Conference of 1937, now in recess, to determine whether Japan is violating the Nine-Power Treaty pledging territorial integrity to China.
An official statement issued at Tokio merely records the adjournment of the talks between Sir Robert Craigie and Mr. Hachiro Arito in order to give time for further consideration. It adds that the negotiators discussed the general background of the Tientsin situation. Salvage divers found the sunken American submarine Squalus resting on an even keel after her second plunge to the bottom, when she broke away from the salvage gear. The vessel is apparently undamaged, although the salvage chains and gear have badly fouled the hull.
