ACTION TAKEN
CHEMICAL UNION DEREGISTERED THE AUCKLAND DISPUTE. MINISTER'S STATEMENT. The registration of the Otahuhu Chemical Manure Workers' Union, members of which have been on strike since June 26, was cancelled as from yesterday. This announcement was made by the Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb, who said that the action had been taken under the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment Act passed on Tuesday. Notice of cancellation appeared, in the Gazette yesterday. This automatically cancels the Northern Industrial District Chemical Manure Workers' Award, dated October 17, 1938, the Minister said, and deprives the workers in the industry in that district of the benefits of the machinery and other privileges, including compulsory membership of the union, under the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, 1925, and it amendments.
"This does not affect the right of the workers to negotiate for an agreement under the Labour Disputes Investigation Act, 1913," Mr. Webb added, "and, notwithstanding the action I have taken, I desire to state that the Government is anxious to assist in bringing about a settlement of the, unfortunate dispute that exists in the Auckland district and will do its utmost to bring the parties together with this object in view"
