Statements that negotiations have been begun for a settlement of the Danzig question are described in Warsaw as a move by German offiicial propagandists aimed at dividing Britain and Poland. It is pointed out that Poland will not negotiate on any terms until Herr Hitler withdraws his demand for the inclusion of Danzig in the Reich.

Signor Mussolini’s reluctance to be drawn into a devastating war at the heels of the senior Axis partner remains an indisputable factor in the European situation —a reluctance which Signor Mussolini’s silence only confirms.

A review by the German Admiralty describes the Russian naval programme as being larger than is generally assumed. In the Leningrad area alone, it states, four yards are working at full' pressure on new constructional work, including a 35,000-ton battleship, three heavy flotilla leaders, two aircraft-carriers, and 72 submarines.

Responsible Paris newspapers allege that three Cabinet Ministers are implicated in the Nazi spy and propaganda plots in France, says the Paris correspondent of the Daily Worker. The wife of one Cabinet Minister is said to have had close contact with an expelled Nazi named Abetz.

After a consultation between the Home Secretary, Sir Samuel Hoare, and the Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, Sir Philip Game, and with the co-operation of the Eire Government, Parliament is expediting legislation in order to illegalise the Irish Republican Army. Sir Samuel will introduce a bill in the House of Commons on July 20 conferring authority on the Government to seize Republican funds found in England.
