LOCAL AND GENERAL

Objection to the failure of the Borough Council to respond when a motion was put was voiced by Cr. G. Cameron at the Council meeting on Monday evening. However, the Mayor, Mr. H. T. Morton, laughingly held that he could read the thoughts of every Councillor—and if they objected to anything they could yelp like young pups. Cr. Innes-Jones held that in this respect the procedure was “strictly Parliamentary!”

At a meeting of farmers in Taumarunui a farmer said that costs were so high now that it was estimated that a farmer would require to milk 20 cows to pay for the wages and keep of one man on the farm.

While playing Rugby at the Te Awamutu school grounds on Saturday afternoon, in the match Te Awamutu v. Te Kuiti High Schools, ja Te Kuiti player, Thomas Lowrie, aged 15, had the misfortune to sustain a fracture of the left leg, when he collided with a Te Awamutu player. Lowrie was rendered first aid, and then despatched by ambulance to Waikato Hospital.

On quite a number ot occasions he had been approached to ask why no pedestrian crossings had been painted on Te Kuiti main streets, Cr. McLennan told the Borough Council on Monday evening. He suggested that these were necessary across the Sheridan Street intersection and leading to the Ladies Rest Room. However, it was stated that the forms of crossing yet devised had proved somewhat unsatisfactory, and it would be better to wait until the Transport Department had decided which was the most satisfactory form of pedestrian crossing.

Including a play by the nurses of the Te Kuiti Hospital, vocal and elocutionary items and many novelties, an attractive programme has been arranged by the Women’s Institute for the Paddy’s Market to be held in the Parish Hall to-night. Funds are in aid of the Centennial Park Fund.

Pupils of the local High School evidently believe in the Scout maxim of doing good deeds. One of their number is at present laid up with a broken leg, but while he is away his classmates take their turn to visit his home and perform the work, such as chopping wood, which was this lad’s task. The spirit which prompted this has been much appreciated.

The deplorable state of the streets of Te Kuiti, particularly the new street past Centennial Park, was the subject of comment by Cr. Cameron at the Borough Council meeting on Monday evening. When other Councillors queried if patching was of much avail he dissented, but held that the potholes should be properly picked and the area then rolled. The Town Clerk undertook to make arrangements to grade the streets as soon as possible.

The need for every offender in regard to noxious weeds to be prosecuted was stressed at the Borough Council meeting on Monday evening. The Council were dissatisfied with the failure of the action in respect of the area known as the Lusk Estate, and the Mayor immediately rang up to obtain a report fom the Borough solicitor as to how the action was proceeding. If action taken in this way was unsuccesful, the Mayor suggested that the Borough clear the property and charge this Work to the company that owned the area. Other areas with which much dissatisfaction was expressed lay near railway town and down Waitete Road. A discussion on the matter ensued, after which it was decided that Crs. McLennan, Higgins and Cameron make a tour of the Borough as soon as convenient after the Borough foreman had been appointed to act as noxious weeds inspector.
