The French Prime Minister, M. Daladier, has personally taken charge of the investigations into Nazi propaganda methods, under the espionage laws. In an official statement, the Prime Minister assures the country that the purge will be pursued without consideration for anyone. He is also resolved to prevent the Government's action becoming a matter of polemics.
A further increase in the number of detectives attached to the Special Branch of Scotland Yard will be made following the discovery of intensified activity on the part of Nazi agents in Britain.
At the adjourned hearing of the inquiry into the disaster to the submarine Thetis, it was intimated that Captain H. B. Oram, one of the survivors, would be recalled to give evidence on the suggestion that the submarine's underwater signalling apparatus was out of order, thereby ing vessels.
The Anglo-Japanese conversations concerning the situation at Tientsin were opened on Saturday and lasted three and a half hours. The delegates will meet again to-day, says a message from Tokio.
Top hats were smashed in, umbrellas were broken and ties were torn after Harrow beat Eton for the first time in 31 years in the annual cricket match. When the winning run was hit Lord's became a welldressed bear-garden.
In an article in the newspaper Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung, RearAdmiral Gadow says the invasion of England is no longer academic, but practical. He cites British experts' views that the development of submarines, aeroplanes and wireless has strengthened England's defences, and mentions also the benefits of these developments to an attacker.
