A MATTER OF NIGHTWEAR.
Up to the 19th century the clothing of the sexes was always much the same in one respect—in the matter of nightwear. Ancients had no word for nightwear, and the men and women alike used nightgowns in the Middle Ages. Raleigh went to his execution in a "black velvet nightgown and lace nightcap." Marie Antoinette was executed in a white pique nightgown. In Ireland in the 18th century women wort chintz and men green damask nightgowns. It took nine yards, too, to make one for a man. But towards the end of the 19th century men adopted pyjamas while women continued to use nightdresses.
