MEMORIAL TO CHIEF

LATE MR. PETER BARTON HONOURED. CEREMONY AT MAORI PA. LARGE NUMBER PRESENT. A memorial to the late Mr. Peter Barton, one of the leading chiefs of the Maniapoto tribe, was unveiled at the Pa cemetery at Te Kuiti on Saturday, on the fourth anniversary of his death. The memorial, a red granite cross, was as a gesture to the East Coast Maoris, unveiled by a Hawke's Bay chief, Mr. Nikera, after a short ceremony at the graveside. Prior to this ceremony a service was conducted by the Rev. Father Shore. King Koroki was present at the ceremony, and there were about 900 to sit down to the dinner which followed, the company including visiting Maoris from Hawke's Bay, Tauranga, Manawatu and the Waikato; while pakeha guests included Mr. fiore, Mayor of Te Awamutu, Mr. F. O. R. Phillips, chairman of the Otorohanga Town Board, Mr. H. T. Morton, Mayor of Te Kuiti, and Police Inspector Lopdell, of Hamilton.
