"Sites for State houses in areas
that are serviced are rapidly diminishing," said the Director of Housing (Mr. A. Tyndll), in an interview at Christchurch. "We have got to plan ahead and make provision for more
and more areas to be roaded, and served with drainage, sewers and water," he said. Since the beginning of the Department's operations 27 months ago, he said, over 6200 houses had been begun, of which 3900 were completed. "We have houses occupied in about 90 towns, completed in 100
towns, and land in 124 towns. Up to
the present we have called tenders for 800 houses and are turning them out completed at a rate of over 66 a week." Asked what effect the Department's operations were having on the housing shortage throughout the Dominion, Mr. Tyndall said that in a number of smaller centres the problem was solved. In Auckland and Wellington, however, the shortage was still very acute.
