RAGWORT IN LIME

MINISTER'S EXPLANATION. NOT FAULT OF WORKS. "It is not conceivable that a stalk of ragwort of the size mentioned could go through the fine screens used at the works," said the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. W. Lee Martin, in a letter received at the meeting of the Waikato sub-provincial executive of the Farmers' Union in Hamilton, referring to a suggestion from the executive that a stalk and full flower-head of ragwort had been found in a "bag of lime by a Waikato farmer. The Minister advised that the inspector of stock at Te Awamutu had interviewed the farmer concerned.

"The possibility was discussed of the offending ragwort, being in an empty bag forwarded by a farmer who had" been gathering ragwort from his farm and had not been careful to see that all the ragwort had been emptied out," added the Minister. "There is also the possibility that some person at the .works put the stalk in as a crude practical joke, or with malicious intent."
