CENTENNIAL PARK

RAISING OF DEVELOPMENT FUND. . ORGANISATIONS MEET. PLANTING OF AREA. Reports from the various organisations in the town which are making an effort to raise funds for the development of Centennial Park were received at a meeting of the Centennial Park Committee held in the Borough Chambers on Wednesday evening. The Mayor, Mr. H. T. Morton, * was in the chair.

A number- of the * organisations already had their campaigns under way and the Harrier and Cycle Clubs were congratulated on their fine start in raising the sum of £4O by their initial effort. On behalf of the two Clubs, Mr. McCalman stated that as a result of the success of their first venture it had been decided to increase their objective to £75, or more if possible. Mr. Morton stated that tenders had been let for the ploughing and forming of a. track on the park, and the work would be completed in about two months' time, after which the area would be sown in grass. It was decided that the large firms with branches in the town be written to asking for donations to assist the work.

After some discussion it was decided to hold a public function, on the lines of the final night of the Winter Show Queen Carnival, about a week before the end of the campaign, when the progress of the various organisations would be indicated throughout the evening. In reply to a question by Mr. J. Hine, Mr. Morton said that he had received a report from a firm of horticulturists regarding the planting of trees on Centennial Park and it was advised to plant Lawsonianas round the area is to provide shelter, with different species of deciduous trees about 15 feet inside the area.
