CHAMPION COOK

CULINARY CONTEST IN BRITISH ARMY.

The champion master-cook of the army was carried shoulder high and .cheered to the echo by- cooks of lesser degree, after a more sedate ceremony when Sir Isidore Salmon, M.P., had presented him with the Isidore Salmon Silver Challenge Cup in the presence of the quartermastergeneral to the forces, other officers of high rank and a large company of cooks-in-training, says the London "Times." The occasion was worthy of all that was done to make it im-pi-essive.

Sergeant Thomas Carney, the champion, had been awarded 90 per cent, marks in "the final competition at the army school of cookery. The meal to which the competitors directed their skill was one of leek soup, steak and kidney pudding with boiled potatoes and braised onions, creamed rice and stewed prunes. Sergeant Carney is in the First Battalion, the South Lancashire Regiment, and has been in the cookhouse for six out of his eight years in the army. Before enlisting he was a lorry driver, and it was only in the army that his latent flair for cookery was developed. This has been a great day for the 24-year-old sergeant, and it seems that • his career as a cook is assured. During the weekend he will appear at Earl's Court, and civilian experts at the ceremony declared solemnly that he would soon be in Hollywood.
