The approximate number of sheep in the Dominion on April 30, according to an interim return in the last, issue of the Gazette, was 31,857,549, a decrease of 521,225 on the final figure for 1938. The figures for the North and South Islands are as follows: North Island 17,497,492, decrease 398,507; South Island 14, 450,057, decrease 222,718. The only districts in which increases wererecorded were Marlborough, Nelson, Westland (30,220) and Otago (216,883).
