ENGINEER OR FOREMAN?

BOROUGH COUNCIL DEBATE. CLOSE DIVISION ON MATTER. Whether a Borough foreman or a Borough engineer should be appointed to replaae Mr. B. J. Drake, who has been appointed to another position, was very keenly debated at a special meeting of the Borough Council last evening. The Works Committee recommendthat applications be called for a Borough engineer at a salary of £425, rising to £450, but an amendment was moved to this at the meeting by Cr. Higgins, seconded by Cr. Cameron, ed that applications be called for a ough foreman at a commencing salary of £364, rising to £4OO within six months.

The amendment that a Borough foreman be appointed was carried on a division, the Mayor, Mr. H. T. Morton, and Crs. Higgins, Cameron, McLennan and Innes-Jones voting in favour of it, and Crs. Dobson, Rundle, Harris, Hetet and Johnson against it, the Mayor exercising his casting vote in favour of the amendment. Crs. Cameron and Dobson were appointed to list the applicants for consideration by the Council.
