WEDDING

DERECOURT—HOLMES. The wedding was solemnised at St. Barnabas’ Church, Opunake, at 11 a.m. on June 4, of Gwendoline Louisa, only daughter of Mr. R. S. Smith and the late Mrs. Smith, and granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Holmes, Snr., of Opunake, to William James, fourth son of Mrs. and the late Mr. Harry Dereeourt, of Te Anga. The Rev. J. H. Datson came from Aramoho to officiate. The bride entered the church, escorted by her father, Mr. Holmes, to the strains of the wedding march played by Mr. W. Markham, a friend of the family. She was gowned in a charming frock of embossed magnolia satin cut on classical lines, fitting to the figure with tight sleeves pointed over the hands, and a fish-tail train. She wore a beautiful embroidered veil and carried a shower bouquet of freesias, roses and maidenhair fern with satin ribbons.

She was attended by Miss Moyna Sutton, Marton, chief, and the Misses Nova and Merna Holmes, all cousins of the bride. The bridesmaids were frocked alike in French lilac taffetas with overdress of stiffened net with bands of ribbon, taffetas scalloped collar and taffetas sash. On their heads they wore headbands of lilac and roses. The chief maid carried a bouquet of pink nerines and lilac freesias with lilac ribbons. The others carried shepherdess crooks with large sprays of nerines and freesias bound with lilac ribbon, and all wore silver shoes.

The bridegroom was attended by his brother, Mr. Russell Derecourt, of Te Anga.

The bride’s mother wore a frock of black crepe de chine, lace coatee and velvet hat with feather mount and carried a gold bouquet. The bridegroom’s mother wore a brown striped costume, brown hat with veil, and an autumn-toned bouquet of chrysanthemums, abutilons and autumn leaves.

For going away the bride chose a black self-striped costume, velour hat and skunk stole.

The bridegroom’s gift to the bride was an ivory necklace, to the chief bridesmaid pearl earrings, and to the junior maids, silver bangles. Their future home will be at Oeo.
