GARBAGE FUMES

CANBERRA DESTRUCTOR.

DUKE’S PARTIES MAY SUFFER,

Sydney, June 3

Unless the Australian Givernment decides to do something in the meantime, the Duke and Duchess of Kent, when they go to Canberra, will find a garbage incinerator in the vicinity.

While the Government has been transforming the interior of Government House at substantial cost for the arrival of the Duke and Duchess, an incinerator which disposes of Canberra’s garbage is in active operation about three-quarters of 'a mile from Government House on the skyline that is visible from the windows of the residence.

Complaints have been made that fumes of the incinerator create a noticeable smell in Government House grounds, and it has been suggested that in future the success or otherwise of Government House garden parties will depend on the direction of the wind.

Apart from this, however, the incinerator, with its halo of fumes at the top of its square chimney is a conspicuous feature of the landscape. Many people in Canberra are wondering why officialdom, with hundreds of acres of unoccupied land, to choose from, should have selected this particular site. The official answer is that the architectural design of the incinerator is in keeping with its setting, and that the process of garbage destruction is so scientific that residents of Government House are not likely to be inconvenienced.-'

The Australian Government expects that the extensions which are being made to Government House will cost £28,85.0. This figure represent a substantial increase on previous estimates.
