CONDITION OF ESPLANADE.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —May I draw attention to the state of the Esplanade Road between Rata Street and View Road. Having' travelled in various countries and driven over numerous roads, I may take the liberty of stating - that never in my travels have I seen a more disgraceful road. Why should money be spent on trees to be planted on the footpaths which in a few years to come will be more dirt to the town? I wonder if the Council will supply the families with umbrellas during the wet weather to walk beneath the said

trees, and if the Council will depend on the wind to clean the leaves during the autumn fall. In conclusion, I think that it money was spent repairing the roads it will be used to a better advantage, and we have to pay sufficiently to keep cars on the roads as to entitle a surface to be of a fairly reasonable nature. Hoping that something will be done to improve the above-men-tioned road and thanking you for the space allowed. —I am, etc.,

J. BALDWIN
